Three projects from the best city in the world this year

Shanghai has been named this year’s 2020 Smart City. The affiliated city has a four-year Smart City plan for 2016 that showcases a wide variety of Smart City solutions and initiatives.

Shanghai, crowned the Smart City of the Year at Virtual Smart City Live 2020, showcases a variety of integrated solutions that can guide the growth of other global smart cities.

Shanghai’s long-term smart city plan, which runs from 2016 to 2020, focused on improving a variety of initiatives, including intensive digital infrastructure, e-government services and a city brain.

Megacity has become a standard for flexible, eco-friendly living. Here are some linked solutions that work in Shanghai.

Urban brain

Shanghai used Alibaba's City Brain solution, which uses machine intelligence to solve transportation, security, urban planning and many other problems. Biometric facial recognition cameras, drones and satellite images help take millions of pictures of districts. Intensive Learning Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems then identify issues such as illegal parking, traffic vulnerabilities, congestion and illegal garbage. This system can adjust traffic light time or alert emergency services.

Digital government

The city’s e-government portal has registered more than 14.5 million users with a population of over 24 million. Before the system starts, processes like applying for a business can take days and many stops for different departments. The one-stop portal, e-government system reminds such processes of online shopping.

Through the portal, citizens can meet business records and other regulatory requirements, pay utility bills, provide emergency response information and much more. Real-time maps and updated emergency information allow city officials and citizens to react and prepare for times of crisis.

Dual Gigabit City

Another part of the four-year Smart City plan is to use the infrastructure needed to make Shanghai the first dual-gigabit city - a city with both wired and wireless gigabit broadband.

Shanghai, which covers 9.6 million households, has achieved 99% home coverage. The city can also boast of its 55 outdoor and indoor base stations.

City officials aim to increase bandwidth for users and popularize 5G usage in the coming years.

Connected and efficient, the metropolis is set up to meet the needs of its citizens, keeping them more informed, safer and more environmentally friendly than ever.
